What do you have a right to photograph in public? Who owns the copyright to your investigative photos? How do you protect your images? With Artificial Intelligence, how can I prove my photos are real? If you are using photography in your work, you should be asking these questions and learning the answers. Speaker Alicia Wagner Calzada, an attorney in San Antonio who helps photojournalists protect their rights through her work with the National Press Photographers Association, will provide an overview of these and other legal considerations involving photography, empowering you to make the right decisions in your practice.
Today's privacy threats have moved far beyond the traditional bug in the room. While hidden microphones and covert cameras still exist, modern eavesdropping concerns now include smartphones, Wi-Fi networks, cloud-connected devices, GPS trackers, smart home systems, workplace technology, and everyday consumer electronics that can be misused to monitor conversations, movement, and personal activity.
This introductory program provides a practical look at how electronic surveillance has evolved, what today's threats often look like, and why privacy concerns are no longer limited to corporate boardrooms, political campaigns, executive protection details, or high-profile investigations. Private investigators, executive protection professionals, attorneys, business owners, and security teams are now being asked to recognize and respond to concerns involving hidden cameras, unauthorized audio recording, vehicle tracking, compromised devices, and digital access to private spaces.
The presentation is designed to separate fear from fact. Attendees will gain a clearer understanding of common surveillance methods, realistic warning signs, and the role of a properly conducted TSCM inspection. The focus is not on turning attendees into technicians, but on helping them better recognize when a concern may be credible, what questions should be asked, and when a qualified TSCM professional should be brought in.
Instructor: Jeff Shaw
Many investigators use open-source intelligence to augment private investigations today. This session will explore a variety of use cases where OSINT is the key to increasing the pace of investigations, generating successful outcomes, and allowing investigators to take on more more difficult cases. From informing surveillance ops to performing extended due diligence in background checks, OSINT powers technology driven investigations. Try it without extensive automation and your investigations can instead be bogged down in labor intensive cyber intelligence gathering activity.
Instructor: Isaac Peck
Private investigators face more liability exposure than ever from clients with bad intentions and careless subcontractors, to brand-new risks created by AI tools like ChatGPT. Isaac Peck (President of OREP Insurance) walks through real-world claim stories from PIs around the country and the contract clauses and insurance coverages that would have changed the outcome. Peck also covers best practices in the age of Artificial Intelligence, including the most common mistakes PIs make with AI and the new AI exclusions that carriers are quietly filing on E&O and umbrella policies right now.
Attendees will learn:
- The most common claims filed against PIs and how to defend against them
- Contract clauses that actually protect you: client indemnification and restrictions on use
- How to vet clients and subcontractors to avoid getting dragged into lawsuits
- The biggest AI mistakes PIs make and how to avoid them
- What new AI exclusions on E&O and umbrella policies mean for your practice

Forensic Investigative Genetic Genealogy (FIGG) has transformed the way investigators approach unidentified human remains and violent crime cases. This session explores how traditional genealogy, DNA analysis, and investigative research combine to restore identities to the unidentified and provide long-awaited answers for families and communities. Attendees will gain a basic understanding of the FIGG process—from DNA extraction and sequencing to database matching and family tree reconstruction—while also learning about current challenges, ethical considerations, and the growing role of FIGG in modern investigations. Through compelling real-world case studies, including successful identifications conducted by Moxxy Forensic Investigations, this presentation highlights the persistence, collaboration, and human impact behind FIGG work.

In today's investigations, the most valuable intelligence is often hiding in plain sight. From social media activity and digital footprints to obscure online data sources, open-source intelligence (OSINT) has become a critical tool for modern investigators looking to move faster, think smarter, and uncover what others miss.
In this session, Ben Owen and Danni Brooke from The OSINT Group will demonstrate how OSINT can be used to identify individuals, uncover behavioural patterns, and develop actionable leads that support real-world investigations. Drawing on real case studies and operational experience, they will show how online information can be transformed into meaningful intelligence and evidential insight.
Attendees will leave with a clear understanding of how to integrate OSINT into their investigative workflow, enhance their current techniques, and ultimately gain a decisive edge in their cases.

Crypto fraud has exploded into one of the fastest-growing financial crimes affecting clients today. In 2025 alone, the FBI recorded $11.36 billion in U.S. crypto fraud losses—a 22% increase year-over-year—with investment scams driving $7.23 billion of that total and the average victim payment jumping 253%.
This practical, jury-level session gives licensed investigators the clear foundation they need to handle these cases effectively. You’ll learn how blockchain actually works (using simple, real-world analogies), recognize the dominant scam typologies—including pig butchering, AI deepfakes, rug pulls, and impersonation schemes—and understand exactly how illicit funds move through layering tactics like peel chains, mixers, chain hopping, and DeFi protocols.
The session walks through proven investigation steps: gathering critical data from clients, using free blockchain explorers, and applying professional tools (with a focus on accessible platforms like BreadCrumbs). You’ll also cover victim red flags and profiles, key legal and practical limitations, reporting resources, and referral pathways.
Whether you’re new to crypto cases or already seeing them in your practice, you’ll leave with actionable techniques, ready-to-use resources, and a competitive edge in this rapidly expanding area of private investigations. No technical background required—just practical knowledge you can apply immediately.
Instructor: Justin Hodson
This fast-paced presentation provides investigators, attorneys, adjusters, and litigation professionals with a practical overview of Event Data Recorder (EDR) investigations and how vehicle-generated data can impact claims, litigation, and fraud investigations. Attendees will gain insight into preservation issues, investigative strategies, and real-world applications of EDR evidence.
Instructor: Kelly Riddle
The seminar will cover different databases, where the data comes from and how to use the data effectively in investigations.
